A Letter to My Friend, Rain

A speech written as a letter to an old friend, one who falls constantly and never gets hurt.

Fellow Toastmasters, what often falls but never gets hurt? Rain.

I'd like to introduce you all to my friend, Rain. This one's for her, in the form of a letter.

Rain, my friend.

Alone

You spoke to me whenever I felt alone. You've bolstered me all these years, through the ups and the downs. Whenever I cried, you cried with me. You were there watching me pull all-nighters over homework. A few weeks ago, when I had the flu and stayed in my room for a whole week, you came and sat with me.

I want you to know: I feel most alive when you're around.

The senses of it

I love running with you. I love the feel of you, and I don't mind getting drenched — well, sometimes. You do realize I get sick when you pour too much love on me, right? Your smell, bouncing off the plants, makes me feel good. You calm my mind just by being there. When you speak, it helps me sleep.

What you give me

You helped me realize that even when it's dark outside, you made sure there was a light in me. You give me a reason to stay home, to look inward, and to find ways to enjoy time with family. When you stop by, it's time for ramen, Netflix, and freshly baked vegan chocolate chip cookies. You work with the sun to make rainbows, and you rarely get the credit for it. If you're the one who plants the gold at the end of it, please write back.

Feedback I got: opened with humor, a genuinely unique concept, real emotion, good variation in the humor, strong eye contact, and solid visual aids. Only note: could have gone a bit longer.
